Women Go Wild With Photography

Meet some of Kerala’s women wildlife photographers who have taken a brave ride into the wild, capturing untamed nature through their lens. An increasing number of women have dared to tread a path dominated by men and are loving every moment of it.  Sleepless nights and near death situations that they encounter in the wild have never been a dampener for these women.  Their love for nature and passion for photography keep them motivated.

“When I first made a trip to the forest and started clicking pictures, little did I know how the trip is going to impact my life. In fact, soon I was motivated to go on another trip to learn about nature and wildlife,” recalls Nisha Purushothaman.

Although capturing untamed nature is fun, these photographers say unanimously that one needs to be very cautious while venturing into the wild.

“Although the wild explorations are liberating, being a woman, you need to be cautious. You can be adventurous and passionate, but recklessness will invite unwanted problems. So, it is always better to go in small groups of friends.Fortunately,I have not faced any unpleasant situations. In fact, I have met extremely helpful people during such trips,” says Aparna.

Interestingly, Nisha is game for solo expeditions across India, but not in her home state. “I have travelled across North India all alone for shoots. But unfortunately, closer home, my sister or parents accompany me. We can’t blame them as the state of affairs in Kerala is such that there is no safety for women,” says the young photographer.

Has she encountered any attacks from animals? “Frankly speaking, we are the invaders and we intrude into their lives. Live and let live is my policy and I try my best not to disturb them,” she says.
